Welcome to Ciarrai's Website

Hello & Welcome

My name is Ciarrai and this, as you probably guessed is my website. Primarily created for my own amusement and for the enjoyment of my family and friends, this site is dedicated to my adventures as (among many things) an obsessive knitter, aspiring jewelry designer, amateur photographer, avid reader, music lover, theater fan and geek.

At a Glance

I am constantly updating this site, sometimes with little tweaks and changes to the site itself, sometimes with posts to my live journal about my day to day life but mostly with information about the knitting and jewelry projects I am working on, the books I am reading, my upcoming photo trips and events, and the photos I take. And so, in order to make things easier to find, I have condensed my most frequent updates here into one, easily accessible spot.

Upcoming Photo Trips and Events

I spend a great deal of the year exploring local parks, arboretums, museums, festivals and fairs looking for fun things to do and cool things to photograph. I often invite family and friends to join me in my travels and for planning purposes, I post a schedule of where I am hoping to go. This is a short list of the most rapidly approaching events on my agenda. You can click here for a full listing of my upcoming trips and events. If you are interested in joining me for any of them or would like more information, please feel free to email me.

  • 7/4 - Independance Day Celebration at Sagamore Hill
  • 7/12 - Huntington Independence Day at Colonial Arsenal Museum
  • 7/16 - East Wind Country Gardens / Pindar Vineyard Trip
  • 7/17 - Long Island Shakespeare Festival at Suffolk Community College

Recently Completed Craft Projects

It is rare that I go anywhere or spend any great amount of time not working on my latest knitting project or jewelry design. Christmas and birthdays usually involve a hand-made gift for my family and friends and I am beginning to branch out into taking on commissions for people who have admired my work. Here is a listing of my most recently completed projects. I have included both a link to a LJ post about the project (usually describing the process of making the piece, my thoughts about the design, and other details) and a link to the photos that I have posted on Flickr. You can see more of my work here. If you are interested in commissioning me to make something for you, please feel free to contact me.

Recent Additions to my Flickr Photo Gallery

In addition to taking tons of photos of my family and friends (especially my adorable nieces and nephews) * , I also spend a lot of time exploring local parks, gardens and arboretums, museums, galleries and historic places, and attending various festivals and fairs, looking for cool things to take photos of. I post the results online in my Flickr Photo Gallery. I have posted a short list of my most recent photos but the complete gallery can been seen here.

* Some photos in this set can only be viewed by family and friends. Please email me if you would like access to the full set.

Recent Updates to my Goodreads Library

An avid reader, I use GoodReads.com to keep track of what books I have read, what books I am currently reading and what books I may want to read in the future. After I complete a book, I rate it and post a short review. Here is a short list of my most recent book reviews and of any other recent updates and additions to my library.

Recent Live Journal Posts

I like to think of this site as a place where friends and family can check-in with me and see what's going on in my life. In order to keep everyone up to date with the latest news and to share my thoughts as I go through my day to day life, I maintain a Live Journal. I have linked to a few of the most recent entries but my LJ can also be found in its entirety here. Please feel free to comment on any of the posts or email me if you would like to chat about anything that I have written.

Recent Site Updates and Changes

I am constantly tweaking and changing the site, hoping to make it look better or to make it easier and better to visit. This is a short list of recent changes that didn't fit into any of the categories above.

Regarding Graphics

Right now, there is nothing in terms of a logo or header on this page. But eventually, (as soon as I can find an artist to complete the design) I will be posting a graphic in the left hand, top corner. It will be personalized version of the traditional Irish Claddagh which I like to call the Ciarrai Claddagh. Like all Claddaghs, the Ciarrai Claddagh features two hands clasping a crowned heart. These elements said to represent love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). The Celtic knot-work that forms the arc and the trim on the hands and crown reflect the Claddagh's Irish origins and my own Irish heritage. Because of the symbolism involved, the Claddagh is often used as a ring, particularly engagement or wedding rings. The Ciarrai Claddagh is no different, but instead of a solid band or some Celtic knot-work forming the curves of the ring, the Ciarrai Claddagh features two sprays of flowers, most notably Lily of the Valley and Lavender. These flowers were chosen because they are my favorite flowers and because of their symbolism. Lily of the Valley, in addition to being the official flower of May (my birth month), is said to represent "Sweetness" and a "Return to Happiness," while Lavender symbolizes "Devotion." Together, these elements reflect the best of my life, both as it is and as I hope it will be.
